Navigate Open Enrollment With These Tips… And Our Help

Health insurance benefits

Open enrollment season is underway, as many Americans are now in the process of evaluating health insurance options and signing up for coverage offered through the Affordable Care Act (ACA) – also known as “Obamacare.” In fact, last year’s period reached record-high numbers, with over 15.7 million people registering for benefits through Marketplaces across the country. It’s a remarkable statistic that underscores the integral role the ACA plays in providing accessible healthcare to both individuals and their families.

If you’re one of the millions of people who are currently browsing the Marketplace, there are many important points to consider when picking a plan before the 2024 open enrollment window closes in mid-January. At Boyd Insurance & Investments, our agents regularly research, compare and select plans that align with our clients’ personalized needs – and don’t break their bank. Here’s what our family wants you to know, before signing up for coverage through the ACA, so you and your family can experience the Protection for Life you deserve.

Remember: There’s A Federal Holiday Ahead

Dates matter when signing up for a healthcare policy through the Marketplace for the upcoming year. Typically, the open enrollment period on HealthCare.gov runs from Nov. 1 to Jan. 15 – and purchasers who apply on or prior to Dec. 15 can receive coverage that starts on New Years Day. However, for the 2024 enrollment window, the deadline falls on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, which means you’ll have until Jan. 16 to enroll for a plan that will begin in February.

Know What Information is Needed For Coverage

When applying or re-enrolling for ACA coverage, you’ll need to provide details not only about yourself but also income, people in your household and more. Florida Blue has numerous resources explaining what information to gather and how to prepare. Have these documents readily available when purchasing a plan and applying for subsidies:

  • Personal information (such as your name and date of birth)
  • Details about everyone in your household (even those not applying), including your spouse, children and anyone you claim as a dependent
  • Applicant’s home and mailing address
  • Social security numbers for those who are being covered
  • Information regarding navigators, insurance agents or brokers who are helping you apply
  • Federal income tax information
  • Income information for everyone in your household
  • Best guess of your household income in 2024
  • Current health coverage information

Consider Your Budget and Personalized Needs

Many people have a longtime doctor, medical practice they love or preferred hospital where they believe they’ll experience the best care. While weighing your coverage options, check to ensure the plan you’re eyeing has the healthcare professionals and resources you personally need in its network. And, if they aren’t listed, take a look at your potential out-of-pocket costs for utilizing these services.
